I get phone calls all the time asking me to photograph large family portraits. The last thing I want to do is pile up a bunch of adults, kids, and dogs and create a portrait! Why I hear you ask? For one thing it is a nightmare to get the attention of everyone in a huge family portrait. No matter what you do someone has their eyes closed, or children are making funny faces. Never mind the adults who can't help but pay attention to their misbehaving kids and not the photographer. Don't get me wrong, I love families, it's just that my goal is always to provide the family with an heirloom portrait they will treasure and sometimes that can be difficult. The other problem is that while I do have a studio it is not large enough to handle really large groups at one time. To add to that, I do a good many of these when all the kids are coming back into town for Thanksgiving or the Christmas holidays when my Santa set is taking most of the studio and it is too cold to go outside. The solution for me has been our Panoramic Portraits. I photograph the individual families and artistically meld each image into a panoramic. People don't melt into the background, The resolution is wonderful, I can get the attention of just a couple of children at a time rather than 10 or 15, and even an occasional dog can be handled with ease! The portraits are a lot of work so I present only one completed proof to the family and we make very few changes to the image other than a simple head swap or slight resizing of a group. Once it is approved by the family I complete the retouching and the portrait is printed and delivered. The panoramics have been a real winner us and the families we photograph. When they are finished they are absolutely stunning.
