It's been 16 years since I've flown an airplane. In the day I flew for the military and then a major airline. At the end of 2021 I decided to invest in a drone. DJI had recently released a new drone with a pretty nice camera on it and that is what I wanted a drone for in the first place; it's camera. But the drone sat in the box untouched for a month. Partly because I was busy and out of town, partly because I was getting up the courage to take this expensive piece of equipment into the air! (It is a lot different piloting an airplane from inside and a drone when you are standing on the ground.) But I finally opened the box and went through the process of updating the firmware in preparation to get her off the ground. One of my first flights was at my son's elk ranch. As it turned out the drone technology is so good these days that I found it quite easy. I flew it over to photograph the elk. They looked up at it, but didn't get too excited about it so I was able to get a few photographs with no trouble. I found it fun to create images from a different point of view. I can't wait until their antlers grow out. When that happens I will be out again! In the meantime I'm hoping to take my part107 exam so I can start doing commercial work. It's good to be back in the air!
