When I was a kid I remember listening to the fable, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." Most people are familiar with the story of the boy who was tending sheep and cried wolf to the towns people as a joke. He suckered them into coming to his rescue several times. One day a wolf attacked his flock. He yelled for the people in town to come and help him save his sheep, but the town's people no longer believed him. Mother nature does that to me a lot. I stopped the car in what I thought looked like an interesting spot to photograph. After wandering around a few minutes I decided to climb a rather steep hill in an attempt to get a better point of view. After huffing and puffing for a while I reached the top. I was there for quite some time, finding to great viewpoints. Unfortunately nothing much was happening in terms of nice light. Finally I gave up, deciding to head back down before it got dark on me. Besides I was cold! After descending down the back side and hiking back to the car, the sky opened up. It lit up the cliffs of Zion's mountains beautifully! I managed to get these shots, but you can bet I wished I had stayed up top! But what can you do. The next time I found myself in a similar situation at Capital Reef. It was freezing cold, but this time I waited. Wouldn't you know it, nothing happened. Next time? I won't believe mother nature, but I'll still hold out with my gear and a lot of hope.
