After a year of drought, the citizens of Utah prayed for snow. We got it with a vengeance! Snow fall records were broken throughout the state, helping to fill reservoirs and opening the chance of flooding from over swollen rivers. Fortunately the temperatures have been moderate helping to ease the snow off the mountains (although it's not over yet). One of the fun things to happen because of the snowfall is occurring at Gunlock State park where the excess water behind the dam flows down a small natural red-rock canyon creating a series of waterfalls that are quite beautiful. It doesn't happen every year so I had been trying to get down there to photograph the event, but life kept getting in the way. Finally I just up and went! Got into Saint George and checked into the Comfort Suites. I didn't even take the time to go to my room. Just grabbed the key, jumped back into the truck, and head for the park where I shot until the sun disappeared. The next morning I was out with the camera again before the sun reappeared. I found the morning light to be the best from the side of the river I was on. I used a variety of lenses to create my images, working until the bright sunlight entered the canyon. Packing up the gear I headed for breakfast, explored a few possible locations for future photography then headed for home, wondering if the flows would be back next year.
I used a Canon EOS R5 for this project with the following lenses:
1. Canon RF 100-500 F/4.5-7.1
2. Canon RF 24-105 F/4
3. Canon RF 15-35 F/2.8
