Yesterday I stood next to my wife, one of my sons, and a young grandson. We were surrounded by fencing with the sun nearing the horizon and the moon hanging in the sky above us. There in front of us was a small herd of ten elk that belonged to my son. They had been brought in from another ranch where he had kept them for several years. He had started out with just a few that had grown the herd to the ten he now has. It has been a long time coming for him. It started with the purchase of his property years before. During 2020 I made several trips with him to Colorado. He had purchased fencing and other supplies from a retiring Elk rancher. On one trip we spent the day taking down some 900 feet of fencing after a 6 hour drive to get there, then drove home with a short stop in Vernal to eat at my favorite Utah Mexican restaurant, Plaza Mexicana. A year or so ago he thought it was coming to an end when the State of Utah put a stop to new Elk ranches. Fortunately that was changed and he was able to carry on. Not long ago he hung a sign over the gate officially declaring his dream the Big Tines Ranch. I'm so proud of him for his planning, hard work and willingness to stick to it. Now he can be proud that the Big Tines Ranch is no longer a dream.
