Everyone knows about the canals in Venice but unless you are a photographer and have actually been there you might not know they can be a great subject for creating art. There are bridges all throughout the city that allow you to cross the channels the permeate the city. Numerous boats are tied up with gondolas and small boats acting as taxis moving up and down taking people on romantic rides and getting others from place to place. It is not easy to photograph them. Some areas are in deep shadows while others catch the bright sunshine challenging the best of photographers and cameras. I found these areas fascinating and spent a lot of time trying to capture them in interesting ways. I was careful not to blow out the highlights in the images knowing I could pull out the shadows during post processing. I found myself looking for interesting compositions, reflections in the water, along with light and dark tonal ranges. Some day it would be interesting to create some digital paintings out of these images, but for now I'll just sit back and enjoy the canal art I got from the camera.
