Now that I have your attention through a catchy title, the best description might actually be - "Can I teach photography and take photographs at the same time." I just returned from Capital Reef National Park where I taught a landscape photography class at the UVU Field Station. Normally, and I did this the first night, I put the camera and the tripod over my shoulder and head out on my own. It's a habit pattern! The next morning I vowed to stay with the students - at least the ones who didn't do what I always do. I got a lot of questions and frankly enjoyed answering them. But I found I was not able to concentrate on my photography the way I normally do when I'm in the zone. In this case it was OK, after all I was being paid to teach them. Over the three days, the students began showing me their result. Some of them were quite nice. They weren't just showing me, but they asked for my opinion and what they could possibly do to make their images better. It was a lot of fun, but it was nagging at me that I didn't think I was getting any photographs to show to them. Of course, I didn't have any time to download and look at mine. To top it off I had planned to stay in the area a couple of extra days to do my own work, but plans changed due to a family health related problem. I guess the bottom line is I was a little frustrated and feeling like I couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time. Yesterday I finally found some time to work on mine. I'll let you be the judge as to whether you think I can photograph and teach at the same time. Let me know.
