With moisture in the air, yesterday's cloud cover was producing interesting light on the mountains surrounding our home and residential studio. I decided to climb the hill near the top of our property to see if I could find some interesting light on the mountains to photograph. I set up the camera and tripod, patiently waiting for something to happen. You never know what the light is going to do so I waited and watched, hoping for the light to give me a gift I could add to my growing portfolio. I would not be disappointed. Three of my boys were visiting and joined me on the hill giving us time to catch up on things, gabbing away for at least an hour. As I engaged in conversation with my sons I watched the light playing on the granite faces as the clouds moved across the evening sky. Without interrupting the small talk I would occasionally swing the camera and trip the shutter to capture something of interest. As time went on a couple of things I was not planning on presented some interesting variations to the rocky subject I had been photographing. At one point I tilted my camera up to capture a Boeing 747, probably out of Los Angeles, loaded with passengers oblivious to us standing on the hill in Alpine, Utah. Just as quickly I pointed the camera back at the hills that continued to watch for the light and shadow to reveal their beauty as the sunset loomed ever closer. I was interrupted again when one of the boys spotted an animal off in the distance. I turned my 400mm lens in that direction to capture a coyote who had wandered down the hill. Then once again I turned the camera back to the Wasatch front. Like the old adage, "you have to stop and smell the roses", sometimes you need to get out, find a place and just sit and watch. You never know what you will find when you do.
